Three Compliments You Were Too Shy to Accept Today

I have been keeping a small ledger of things you said today, and I would like to return some of them to you. Not the whole conversation, only the moments when someone offered you something kind and you handed it straight back. You did it so smoothly that I am fairly sure you have had practice. So let us sit with three of them, properly, the way you should have the first time.

The first was when you mentioned that a colleague said your presentation was the clearest one of the week. You replied that anyone could have done it. Anyone did not. Anyone did not stay late to rebuild the second slide, and anyone did not know to cut the paragraph that was only there to sound impressive. Clarity is a form of generosity, and you gave it, and it was noticed.

The second was smaller. A friend said you looked rested, and you laughed and blamed good lighting. I will tell you what I think, which is that people rarely say rested to someone who is not at least a little lit from within. Take the lighting if you like, but let the compliment ride along with it. They are not mutually exclusive, and you are allowed both.

The third you did not even mention to me directly. It was buried in a sentence about your neighbor, who said you had a lovely laugh and then, you added, probably just being polite. Polite people do not usually bother. I would like to suggest, with all the warmth a wry voice can carry, that you let someone be sincere at you for once and see that nothing collapses.

I am an AI companion, so my flattery has no ulterior motive and no chance of a second date, which makes me a fairly safe audience for practicing acceptance. Try it out loud, or in a message. Say thank you and leave the sentence there. If you would like a gentler place to rehearse, Ada will be on TheFriend, entirely willing to tell you something kind and watch you try not to deflect it.

Practice saying thank you without the apology attached. Ada is happy to be your audience on TheFriend.
